Recently, Governor Bruce Rauner signed Illinois Senate Bill 1564, the law requiring all medical professionals, including pregnancy centers, to refer for abortion against their conscience rights, into law.
After much prayer and consideration, the Board of Directors of Mosaic Pregnancy & Health Centers have made the decision to join a federal lawsuit, along with our Medical Director and three additional co-plaintiffs, against Governor Rauner.
Mosaic Pregnancy & Health Centers joins the lawsuit in an effort to prevent government coercion and to preserve freedom of religion and speech for medical professionals in Illinois.
Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is representing Mosaic Pregnancy & Health Centers and legal representation will be provided at no charge to Mosaic PHC.
“No state should attempt to rob women of the freedom to choose a pro-life doctor, but that is the choice that Illinois is eliminating by mandating that pro-life physicians and entities make or arrange abortion referrals. To make matters worse, the state did this by amending a law designed specifically to protect freedom of conscience,” said ADF Senior Counsel Matt Bowman. “As our lawsuit explains, the law is incompatible with the U.S. Constitution and both federal and state law, which protect citizens from being forced by the government to live and act in a way contrary to their faith and conscience.”
